Fasching or Karneval

Tradition calls for special hats and masks.

Oktoberfest is a long-ago memory, the last of the Glühwein is gone from Christmas, and you've recovered from the New Year's Eve celebration.  Don't worry; there's another reason to "eat, drink and be merry."

Fasching or Karneval, it's the time to celebrate in the spring.  It's time for the funny hats, silly costumes, red clown noses, and for the fancy masks.

Whether you call it Fasching (as in Munich and Austria), Karneval (as in the Rhineland), or Fastnacht (as in the Mainz region), this is a season of wild fancy-dress parties and costume balls.  Each region celebrates in a slightly different manner, but in all it is a time to let down your hair.

Tradition calls for special hats and masks.
